Exercise load test based on photoelectric pulse wave assessment

Objective Energy consumption is the most direct measurement method for exercise load. The objective of this paper is to use the pulse waveform to measure the exercise load, which may provide foundation for the technology of exercise load test based on wearable devices. Methods The experiment is taken on 32 normal people with the age between 18 and 60 years old, with the finger-type photoelectric pulse wave sensor to measure the pulse wave, and the K4b2 pulmonary function equipment to measure the energy consumption as the golden standard to get the relationship between the pulse wave and energy consumption. Results The period of pulse wave, the amplitude of the main pulse wave and the area of the pulse waveform are more stable in the quiescent state, and decrease in the motion state with increased standard deviations of these three parameters. The experimental results show that the relationship between the integration on time for the pulse waveform amplitude and the energy consumption is linear, and the slope for the optimum fitting line is a constant. Conclusions The exercise load test with finger-type photoelectric pulse wave sensor is available. The pulse waveform feature can fit the energy consumption correctly to measure the exercise load.
