The contours of the liver, intrahepatic arteries, veins, the portal vein and tumor were extracted from patient’s CT data, and the 3D surfaces were reconstructed by contours tiling. Then a user graphical interface was designed to simulate the surgery. A 3D visualization and virtual cutting system of liver was developed based on personal computer. The system was designed based on VTK and realized by Microsoft Visual C++60 A user graphical interface was provided to observe the spatial relationship among the tumor and blood vessels by adjusting the transparency of the object. By interactively modifying the cutting plane, the process of performing an operation for the tumor was simulated. Simulation of the cutplane adjusted and liver resection show that the system could present with vivid profile of the liver and internal vessels in full views based on the patient CT data, and the simulation of surgery cutting is useful for preoperative planning, which could reduce the damage to the liver and vessels by appropriate planning.
