As the open resource of clinical image and object management, dcm4che provides the interface of DICOM and HL7, and strictly follows the IHE standard. Dcm4che is an ideal and powerful tool of healthcare information integration, however little studies on dcm4che have been completed. Based on the introduction of IHE and healthcare information integration, we introduced the features and preliminary applications of the dcm4che open source toolkit for healthcare information system, including some interfaces offered by dcm4che, functional modules and the perfect support for DICOM standard and HL7 Standard. Using some application examples, we explained the availability, efficiency and portability of the dcm4che open source toolkit in healthcare information integration, witch strictly follows the norms of IHE. This study is useful for the largescale applications of dcm4che in future healthcare information integration.
