Objective To design a novel ureteral stent with a nanoscale iron traction thread at the end and the magnetic catheter, and to assess the feasibility of the innovative removal method. Methods We designed and manufactured the stent and catheter. We tested the properties of them, including:nanoscale iron powder content test of the traction thread by thermo-gravimetric analysis, breaking strength test of the traction thread by tractor, magnetization identification of the magnetic catheter by magnetometer, and magnetic catheter clamping force test.We confirmed the validity of the new removal method through conducting removal experiments in a transparent model of urinary system, which was generated in early study, and calculated success rate and removal resistance. Results The mass fraction of nanoscale iron powder was 23% in the dacron traction thread, the breaking strength of the dacron traction thread was 10.12 N,the magnetization of the magnetic catheter was 578 emu/g,and magnetic catheter clamping force was(10.79±0.84) N.Removal experiments were carried out 50 times, the success rate was 98%,and the mean maximum resistance of removal was(5.26± 0.53) N.Conclusions This study preliminarily confirmed that the innovative removal method was effective, and could be manufactured by existing materials. This offered a minimally invasive method to remove the ureteral stent without image guide. The novel ureteral stent and the magnetic catheter had a bright prospect.
