Objective The ontology of breast ultrasound images can help the study of semantic annotation and intelligent retrieval system. In this paper, we try to build the ontology model of breast ultrasound images. Methods First, we determine ontological concepts of breast ultrasound images by keyword combined with corpus high-frequency words. Second, we extend ontological semantic relations of breast ultrasound images based on UMLS. Results The ontology of breast ultrasound images consists of 1274 concepts and 56 kinds of semantic relationships. The ontology is constructed through PROGTéGé. Conclusions The screening method of ontological concepts that is implemented with keywords and corpus high-frequency words here has a better semantic characterization result in describing the breast ultrasound images. This method is applicable to other areas in ontological building as well.
