Objective To analyze the market adoption, features and usage of diabetes self-management applications in China based on the technical standards and clinical guidelines,to provide the information of the applications for the healthcare professionals and patients and a reference for the application developers. Methods By using “glucose” as a keyword to search all the diabetes self-management applications in certain mobile platforms and relevant academic literature, the applications are compared all the functions to the core indicators of related standards, clinical guidelines. Results In these applications only one application’s download count exceeds 5000 times. In 79 applications, only 10 applications use wireless automatic data acquisition,12 applications have the function of end-to-end data synchronization. Conclusions The diabetes self-management applications have gradually developed in the domestic market, however, the utilization rate of applications is still low and the functions of diabetes self-management applications are still flawed. Most applications still have certain missing links, including the connectivity between the measuring device and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) applications, the function of end-to-end data synchronization and the standardized data structure.
